Much of the chatter at Social Gaming Summit stemmed from the limitation Facebook is setting on game developers rather than future opportunity (of course that was covered a bit too).
Developers are becoming more and more discouraged as Facebook seems to limit the viral hooks that can be used to acquire free users. With a limited number of invitations, wall post and the extinction of application notifications, it takes much more creativity to gain free users on Facebook now. It also requires a larger budget as we are seeing more social games advertising directly on Facebook more and more.
The depletion of viral gaming elements seems less about taking away opportunities from third party developers (who have attributed to much of Facebook’s overall success) and instead to better the user experience when it comes to gaming on Facebook.
There is still large opportunities to create powerful social games on Facebook. Brands that already have a substantial following can use custom branded games to engage their following in a unique way while gaining access to some of those user’s relevant data. With Facebook providing extended permissions for more data then ever before, marketers and game developers will find ways to create a richer gaming experience for more users. With less viral obstructions, users will be less resistant to adopt games and more likely to stay on those games. From a budgetary perspective, it will still be cheaper to gain users on Facebook than any other platform.
The landscape is ever changing. The one constant is that there will constantly be changes made to the Facebook developers platform. Although price per acquisition might be rising there will be more opportunity to acquire more quality users moving forward.
